Welcome!
Welcome to the 2017-18 school year. I am looking forward to working with you and making this a very successful year! The bus ride and long school day are very tiring for your child. Please make sure your child is resting and prepared for a rigorous day.
Our schedule will include a 30 minute lunch time and a 20 minute recess time. Please help prepare your child by allowing 10-12 hours of sleep on school nights. Encourage your child to use mealtimes for eating and quiet talking, so that school lunch can be eaten in a polite and relaxed manner.
Please keep a change of clothes at school for your child. Label the clothing and send it in a bag so your child has access to his/her clothing in case of accidents or illness. Also, label all jackets and lunchboxes.
Morning Procedures
School doors open and breakfast begins at 8:15. As students arrive at school, members of the school community will direct them to our classroom. Students will become responsible for coming and going to breakfast by themselves when they arrive at school. The school bell rings and breakfast ends at 8:45.
Daily Folders
Everyday your child will bring home a daily folder. This folder contains all correspondence from the school system and keeps the communication lines open between you, the parent, and me, the teacher. Attached inside you will find a calendar charting our monthly schedule of field trips, P.E. days and your child’s daily behavior in school. There will also be a zipper pouch in the folder for money transactions. Label all money (field trip, pictures, etc.) on the “record of money transactions” slip. Please check the folder daily for notes, paperwork, and to see all the neat work your child has completed. Please initial your child’s calendar DAILY, so that we know you have seen it. As part of the students’ homework, they need to read/be read to a minimum of 4 books a week. This is very important, as this is part of the homework assigned, the students do receive a homework grade on the report card.
Buses and Bus Tags
Please keep your child’s bus tag attached to his/her book bag everyday for the first two weeks of school. This is our system of keeping things organized and making sure that everyone is where he/she needs to be until the routine is established. If your child is a bus rider and is not going to ride the bus on a particular day, you must send in a note stating how he/she will be getting home. The Transportation note must include the child’s full name and a telephone number you can be reached at, if questions arise. This system keeps your child safe and allows things to flow in an orderly and timely manner.
Snacks and Birthdays
We will have a snack in the afternoons. For the first two weeks, please send a snack with your child everyday and write his/her name on it. We will begin a class snack schedule in September. On the monthly calendar each child will have one day during the month to bring in snack for the entire class. Good examples are goldfish, pretzels, crackers, fruit chews, etc.
Birthdays are an exciting time! If you decide to send in a treat for the class, it must be purchased at a store and brought to school in a sealed package. If it is opened before it arrives, we are not allowed to eat it.
In addition to a class snack, once a month you will be asked to provide one item that is under $5.00. Usually these items will be for celebrations. Some examples could be, 2 cans of string beans for our Thanksgiving feast, red yarn for our memory books, or Clorox wipes because we are running low. If you are not able to provide the class snack or requested item, please let me know as soon as possible.
Classroom Citizenship Agreements
We will begin the school year with the following citizenship agreements:
1. Listen and follow directions.
2. Be respectful to others.
3. Keep your hands, feet and all objects to yourself.
4. Share with others.
Please check your child’s folder daily, if there has been a behavior issue, there will be a color other than green stamped on the calendar for the day. There will also be a note written to explain the day’s events and why your child changed their color. Our school uses a color system to monitor behavior. The color green indicates they had a wonderful day and followed all the rules. A yellow indicates they were having a hard time following rules in the classroom. Lastly, a red indicates he/she had a very hard time throughout the day following class rules and directions. On red, you will be contacted to discuss your child’s behavior with the teacher.
In addition to the communication in the take home folder, I will be utilizing an app called Class Dojo. If you connect the app to your phone, you will receive immediate information about class happenings, positive behaviors and concerns. This is the easiest way to contact me and to keep up to date on classroom information.
Volunteers and PTO
I love volunteers. It is very beneficial for the students to have extra help one on one. PLEASE, PLEASE,PLEASE call the county office to set up a date to get fingerprinted. I can use your help in a variety of ways. This year I would like to have 2 classroom representatives at each PTO meeting. If everyone would so graciously sign up for just 1 for the year that can happen. It should only be an hour of your time for the school year. I highly recommend becoming a PTO member. Let your voice be heard about our school, our class, and our community. With a membership you get to vote on key things that happen at our school like how PTO money is spent, which fundraisers to do, and how to support our staff. This is one of the best ways to show you support MVES your child’s education.
As always, if you have any questions, concerns, or comments please feel free to contact me through a note, scheduled conference, or phone call to the office.
I look forward to getting to know you and your child. Together we will accomplish many things throughout the year.
Thank you,
Mrs. Turner
